It is a very sad statistic that marriages are only lasting 7 years. The family structure is not what it used to be. I know personally of many families who have gone through or are going through a divorce. As I am sure that many of you do as well. We have to support the children and the adults are this transition. We may see this in healthcare while caring for the families. Their attitude and temperament may change during this time and this may come to a head when they are sick and in the hospital. Our roles as nurses, is to be able to collaborate with the families and understand their interactions, effectiveness of communications, expectations and coping mechanisms (Edelman, Kudzma, Mandel, 2014). We as nurses can assist them in their health care needs by advocating for them and educating them in health care questions and/or concerns. Support and understanding from their health care providers will help these patients feel more comfortable in the health care setting.
