Answered Discussion Question:
While reviewing literature and other types of evidence, there are usually gaps. These gaps imply that the researchers did not cover all the aspects of the topic under study, their conclusions were simply biased or the sample size selected was not ideal. In this regard, readers are required to use the information they obtain from the research study with some caution. This is because the presence of the gaps implies that the information in the research study is not a 100% accurate or credible.
Gaps cannot nullify the validity or credibility of a research study. The presence of gaps simply show gives healthcare clinicians opportunity to integrate their own knowledge with the findings of the study while dealing with patients rather than just relying on the findings of the study. Through this integration, healthcare clinicians are likely to provide high quality healthcare services to patients (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011). Therefore, the presence of gaps provides healthcare clinicians with an opportunity to create change.
